EFF was founded in 1990 after the Secret Service began tracking the distribution of a document off of a BellSouth computer that detailed how 9-1-1’s system worked. The Secret Service feared that hackers would overload emergency lines and people who truly had fire, police or medical emergencies would not be able to get help.

A man named Steve Games, who allegedly had that document, was a book publisher whose electronics as well as copies of his firm's latest book were confiscated by the Secret Service. As a result, Games missed deadlines, the book wasn't published in time, and his business was ruined. Unable to find a civil liberties firm that knew enough about technology and the law, Games enlisted a group of people that became EFF -- he was their first case.

One group that EFF is representing today is a group of authors who believe the digitization of books (namely Google Reader) constitutes a violation of privacy.

Razor blade or "freebie" marketing is widely used because people want to always feel like they ar getting a deal. One of the most prevalent examples today is in car sales involving OnStar or XM satellite radio. They are very tempting to purchase cars with these types of ad-ons, but the costs for monthly subscriptions can send cost soaring quickly for consumers.

Printer cartridges are very expensive indeed, "f you’re buying name-brand ink cartridges, which typically hold a few milliliters of ink, you’re shelling out the equivalent of between $3,000 and $5,000 per gallon. (Suddenly, spending $45 to fill your car’s gas tank doesn’t seem so extravagant, eh?) "

When Marcus says the pervs "... go all weird and Silence of the Lambs on you," he is likely referring to Buffalo Bill, one of the villains from both the novel and the film. Buffalo Bill (***SPOILER ALERT***) preyed on overweight women, lured them near, knocked them unconscious and then smuggled them into a dungeon-like hole in his basement. He starved them for three days so he could loosen their skin, fatally shot them, and then skinned them. A skilled tailor, he used their skin to make suits. Buffalo Bill was eventually killed by fledgling FBI agent Clarice Starling.

Primitive uses of Crypto or "secret writing" were used as early as 500 BC.

According to Berkeley Math Professor David Freeman, early examples of cryto inculded writing a message on a Roman slave's head after shaving it, then allowing the hair to grow back. The slave would then be sent out as a messenger and the inteded recipient of the message would again shave the persons head to read the message.

Romans also used "Ceasar Cipher"; a code that involved the shifting of each letter in the alphabet forward.
